Women and the Royal Ulster Constabulary GC, 1970s-1990s by Rosemary Gifford and Dr Jennifer Martin explores the experiences of women who were connected with policing in Northern Ireland during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

The aims of this book are twofold. It directly examines the experiences of policewomen (including Regulars and part-time or full-time Reserves) in Northern Ireland who served in various branches of the Royal Ulster Constabulary during these pivotal decades and looks closely at their hidden histories. Their experiences are unique and - it is argued - the role which women have played in policing in Northern Ireland has not been adequately explored, and they remain in the shadows of their male colleagues, with many untold stories. This book aims to bring such stories out of these
shadows and into a more public realm.

However, secondly, and equally as importantly, this book looks at the stories of the widows and wives of policemen, and other close family members, examining how their loved one's involvement with policing in Northern Ireland impacted directly on their lives.
